The closest match I’ve found to this drum is one at the National Music Museum at the University of South Dakota. Their item number 1043 is described as follows: “Side drum, Belgium, ca. 1850-1900. Brass shell, 274mm (10-3/4") x 398mm (15-11/16"). Eleven leather tugs. Wood rims painted navy blue, each with eleven holes through which the rope passes. Brass snare adjuster. William F. Ludwig II Collection, 2001.†There’s only a slight difference. The snare adjuster has a brass wing nut and housing plate, but the threaded part is iron. The top skin is signed by one of the users: “Alphonse Tainturier, Caporal Tambour au 29 em Regiment D’Infantrie.†Because he was obviously French speaking, he was most likely in the Belgian or French army. It's from the right period to have possibly been used in the Crimean War (1854-56), but I have no proof of that. All parts could be original. If the rope or skins were ever replaced, they were old replacements. At first glance, the rope looks like a modern woven cotton rope, but is actually twisted hemp (or similar material). Only missing item is the snare, which was on top, most common on military drums. The original snare would have been of gut. (15†gut replacements are available from Ludwig.) There is information that both the French and British armies had some brass shell drums from about 1800 onward, though I found no other pictures or descriptions that match this drum very closely. From my own anecdotal experience with old leather items, I thought it probably dated to about 1850-60. And the through-the-rim rope tension style suggests mid-1800’s or earlier. So there you have some fact and some speculation based on experience. Each skin has three punctures or small cuts, mostly near the edge, but it still sounds great when I thump it with a finger. It has been tempting to go at it with a set of sticks, but I’ve resisted. It really is a great old drum. Check our other listings for more interesting stuff. All questions welcomed.
